SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball players Cairah Curran and Hazyl Gray swept the season's first West Coast Conference weekly honors after leading the team to the championship of the Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Classic over the weekend.
Curran took home the WCC Player of the Week honors while Gray was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week.
Santa Clara won three straight games shutting out host, Hawai'i, 3-0 in the championship game. The Broncos beat each of the three participating schools – Saint Louis, Southern Indiana and Hawai'i – to finish 3-2.
Curran, a native of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i, put on a show in front of her home state fans serving as the offensive catalyst and was named MVP of the tournament. She went 11-for-19, scored five times, drove in six runs and stole two bases. The reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year was perfect in 24 chances defensively while playing second base. Hitting from the lead off position, Curran finished the tournament with a slash line of .579/.579/.789 and in the last three games, all Bronco wins, she had nine hits in 12 at-bats including a 5-for-5 game against Southern Indiana. The sophomore also displayed power with three extra-base hits, two of them doubles and a triple, after hitting just one all last season.
Gray pitched 10 scoreless innings and won two games at the tournament. In the championship game, Hawai'i entered the game undefeated at 4-0 but the left-handed hurler threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up four hits, a walk and struck out four in a 3-0 combined shutout effort with freshman Cari Ferguson. Gray also added an insurance run in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to help her cause in the circle.
Earlier in the tournament, she allowed two hits and a pair of walks over 4 2/3 inning while fanning four in the 9-0 win over Southern Indiana.
Gray posted a 0.90 WHIP and held opponents to a .176 batting average en route to being named to the All-Tournament team.
It is the first such honor for Curran and the second for Gray who was named WCC Player of the Week once last season.
The Broncos next play at the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament. The tournament runs from Friday to Sunday with a total of eight games of which the Broncos play in five of them, all at SCU Softball Stadium.
