SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split a pair of games on the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament on Friday, falling to Colorado State 10-8 in the first game and run-ruling Cal Poly 12-4 in six innings in the second game.
Colorado State 10 - Santa Clara 8
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Colorado State (4-3) scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to a 10-8 victory. In the inning, the Rams had three hits, drew a pair of walks, had a hit batsman and was aided by two Bronco errors resulting in six unearned runs for Santa Clara starter Cari Ferguson. Kyra Smith and Abby Edwards each had a 2-RBI hit in the inning.
- Santa Clara (3-3) got to within two runs at 8-6 scoring in each of the first four frames with Rebecca Rubio and Abigail Charpentier each driving in two runs.
- However, Colorado State added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth on another Bronco error to make it 10-6.
- The Broncos chipped away with a run in the fifth on Taryn Clements' RBI single and Marie Martorella's sacrifice fly in the seventh to get within two runs again. They put the potential game-tying runs on the bases with one out but were unable to bring them home. Delaney Saugstad pitched the final three innings in relief to pick up her first save of the season.
- Saugstad came in relief of starter Giselle Bentley who went four innings giving up six runs on seven hits and seven walks. Bentley got her first win of the year.
- Only two of the 10 runs given up by the Broncos were earned.
- The top four hitters of the Bronco lineup were responsible for nine of the 13 hits led by Clements who went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
