SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball scored double digit runs in each game to sweep their Saturday match ups against UIC 12-10 and UC San Diego 11-3 on the second day of the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament to improve to 6-3 on the season.
Santa Clara 12 - UIC 10
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara and UIC racked up a total of 25 hits (12 for Santa Clara and 13 for UIC) and each pitcher threw a complete game but the Broncos outlasted the Flames 12-10.
- Hazyl Gray threw 105 pitches in her complete game effort to remain undefeated on the season at 3-0.
- The score was tied at 3-all after three innings until Santa Clara erupted for five runs in the fourth including an RBI single by Abigail Charpentier and a two-RBI double by Cairah Curran to break the game open.
- UIC (4-5) chipped away at the lead with three runs across the fifth and the sixth innings to get within 8-6. However, Santa Clara (5-3) put up a four spot in the home half of the sixth including three straight RBI doubles by Taryn Clements, Audrey Graham and Kyla Acres to push the lead back out by six runs to 12-6.
- The Flames made things interesting in the seventh, scoring four runs to get within two runs but Gray hunkered down.
- Four Broncos had multi-RBI games led by Clements with three.
- Dee Dee Caskey was in the middle of things offensively for UIC going 5-for-5 with four runs and three RBIs.
- Jasmine Whorley threw 144 pitches in her losing effort and fell to 2-2 on the year.
Santa Clara 11 - UC San Diego 3 (6)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- For the second time in three games, Santa Clara (6-3) run-ruled an opponent, both times coming in the sixth inning.
- On Saturday evening, the Broncos tallied a run in all but one inning to down UC San Diego 11-3 in a game mired with errors and walks. The Broncos took advantage of them, putting up 11 runs on just five hits.
- UC San Diego (2-6) committed seven errors and the pitching staff walked nine. Just six of their 11 runs were earned.
- Cari Ferguson started in the circled for the Broncos and scattered five hits, three runs, one earned over six innings to get a complete game victory. It was her second win of the season for the freshman.
