Baseball Comes From Behind to Beat Spartans on the Road

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team scored first Tuesday for the first time in seven games this season, but it still took a come-from-behind effort to earn a 4-3 non-conference win on the road at rival San Jose State at Excite Ballpark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Max Ross, who two innings earlier had left two runners in scoring position in a tied, 2-2 game, came through in the eighth with a two-out, two-strike RBI double to the opposite field, scoring Andrew Rayment from third and giving the Broncos a 4-3 lead that would stick. Ross also singled to lead off Tuesday's game and scored the Broncos' (4-3) first run, giving them an early, 1-0 lead in the first inning.

  • Santa Clara pitching took care of the rest down the stretch. Freshman righty RJ Meyn (1-0) earned the first victory of his collegiate career with two innings of scoreless relief in the seventh and eighth, stranding an inherited runner in the seventh and striking out three with no walks. Caden Wooster earned his first save since 2023 with a perfect ninth inning, shutting down the Spartans (6-2) with a strikeout, a fly out and a foul pop-up behind home plate.

  • No team scored more than one run in any inning Tuesday. San Jose State went ahead, 2-1, with single runs in the third and fourth innings. An RBI double and an RBI groundout gave the Spartans a one-run advantage and chased Santa Clara starter Jace Gillmore in the fourth. Gillmore still only allowed the two runs and struck out two in his first start of 2025.

  • Santa Clara went back ahead, 3-2, with single runs of its own in the sixth and seventh innings. Tate Medicoff singled home Malcolm Williams in the sixth, who had led off the inning with a double. Mateo Garcia gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead in the seventh, doubling home Ben Cleary after he led off the frame with a walk. But the Spartans evened it right back up at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh after three of the first four batters in the inning singled, capped by Zach Chamizo's game-tying RBI knock.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 2: Henry Stewart and Caden Wooster are the Broncos' two remaining pitchers who have yet to allow an earned run this season, and both threw on Tuesday. Stewart threw two shutout innings, only allowing one hit, while Wooster threw a perfect ninth.
  • 13: Cleary's sixth walk of the season extended his reached base safely streak to 13 games, dating back to last season.
COMING UP
  • Santa Clara's road trip ends on Friday and Saturday as part of a four-game, home-and-home series versus California, which starts with two games in Berkeley. The series concludes with two home games against the Golden Bears on Sunday and Monday. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
