SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball lost a pair of one run games on the first day of the Capital City Classic Tournament falling to UC Riverside 4-3 and to Nevada 2-1.
UC Riverside 4 - Santa Clara 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UC Riverside (8-10) trailed by a run in the top of the seventh but rallied for two runs to defeat Santa Clara 4-3 in the opening game of the Capital City Classic tournament. The loss snapped the Broncos six game win streak.
- Haley Saole doubled in the game-tying and game-winning runs against Alaina Valdez. Kamryn Davis led off the inning with a double and Leilani Juan reached on a fielding error on her sacrifice bunt before the two came home on Saole's gapper to right center.
- Santa Clara (9-4) came into the game batting .347 as a team but were held to just two hits by Reagan Everett and Maddie Heinlin. Both hits came off Everett who went 4 1/3 innings to start the game. All three Bronco runs came off Everett in the third inning with just one earned.
- UCR got on the board first in the top of the third inning. They loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk with one out. Juan hit a sacrifice fly and Saole singled in a run to put the Highlanders up 2-0.
- Santa Clara answered with three runs in the home half of the third on just one hit. Hope Alley was hit by a pitch to lead the inning and Marie Martorella followed with a hit. Cairah Curran put down a sacrifice bunt but an error by Everett scored Alley. With runners in scoring position, Rebecca Rubio plated Martorella with a grounder to the shortstop to knot the game at 2-all and Hazyl Gray followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Broncos a one run lead they would hold on until the seventh.
- Heinlin threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Highlanders to pick up the win and improve to 3-4 on the year.
- Valdez came in relief of starter Hannah Edwards in the top of the fifth and gave up three hits and two runs over three frames to drop to 0-1 on the year.
Nevada 2 - Santa Clara 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Pinch-hitter Lexi O'Gorman delivered the walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh to break a 1-all tie in Nevada's 2-1 victory over Santa Clara.
- Bailie Clark singled to start the seventh and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt before touching home for the game-winning run.
- In a pitcher's duel between Tess Bumiller and Cari Ferguson, it was the Nevada hurler that came up on top. Both pitchers tossed a complete game with Bumiller's line reading seven innings, six hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts as she picked up her third win. Meanwhile, Ferguson went 6 1/3 innings and gave up nine hits, two runs, one earned, walked three and struck out six to drop to 2-3.
- Tatum Maytorena led off the second inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a Bronco error before coming home on a wild pitch to score the first run of the game.
- Santa Clara (9-5) evened the game in the top half of the third on Rebecca Rubio's RBI single to plate Cairah Curran who tripled ahead of Rubio.
- Nevada (12-4) got a multi-hit game from Bailie Clark and Maytorena. Leiora Davidson went 2-for-3 for SCU.
NEXT UP:
- Santa Clara faces the host schools of the Capital City Classic, UC Davis and Sacramento State, in Sacramento on Saturday.
