SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split the two games on the first day of the Golden Coast Classic Tournament, beating Portland State 9-2 and losing to Harvard 9-5 in the night cap.
Game 1: Santa Clara 9 - Portland State 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Rebecca Rubio went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs including the go-ahead run in the fourth to break a 2-all tie while Hannah Edwards threw six strong innings in the Broncos 9-2 win over the Vikings.
- Santa Clara (13-9) had 11 hits in total and broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to push the lead from 4-2 to 9-2. Five of the hits came in the inning including RBI extra base hits from Rubio, Hope Alley and Hazyl Gray.
- Edwards threw 113 pitches and allowed two runs on six hits to improve to 5-2 on the year.
- Portland State (4-20) scored a run in the first and third on three hits but could only muster three more base knocks the rest of the way against Edwards and Kendal Manley who tossed a scoreless seventh in relief.
Game 2: Harvard 9 - Santa Clara 5
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A six-run fifth inning was the difference in Harvard's 9-5 victory. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the fifth, the Crimson scored six runs on six hits, all singles, and two walks to go on top 9-5.
- Priyanka Kaul led Harvard with three RBIs as she went 2-for-3. Her sacrifice fly in the fifth inning got Harvard (7-4) to within a run at 5-4. Finley Payne and Alexa Wohr followed with back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game and put Harvard ahead 6-5.
- Santa Clara (13-10) trailed 3-0 but tied it up in the bottom of the third. Rebecca Rubio and Cairah Curran pulled a double steal to make it 3-1. After a Harvard error made it 3-2, Hazyl Gray tied it up with a sacrifice fly. The Broncos temporarily went ahead 5-3 with two runs in the fourth against Olivia Torres before the big inning by the Crimson.
- Olivia Torres got the win pitching two innings in relief to pick up her first win of the season.
- Cari Ferbuson dropped to 2-6 giving up four runs in 1/3 inning of work.
- Grace Ryan pitched the final three innings to earn her first save.
