SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On Saturday at the Golden Coast Classic Tournament, Santa Clara softball cranked out 20 runs on 23 hits to defeat Columbia 9-3 in the first game and run-ruled Portland State 11-2 in the late game. The Broncos have won three of the four games over the first two days of the tournament which concludes on Sunday.
Game 1: Santa Clara 9 - Columbia 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hazyl Gray drove in four runs on 3-for-3 hitting to help Santa Clara (14-10) lead from the get go while Hannah Edwards threw 5 2/3 innings in start and in relief to defeat Columbia 9-3.
- Gray doubled in a pair of runs in the opening frame as part of a three run inning for the Broncos against Lions starter Emmy Davis which were all unearned. Hope Alley added an RBI double in the second to make it 4-0.
- Columbia (5-7) scored a run in the third and the fifth innings on RBI hits by Payton Shmansky and Cami Neal to cut Santa Clara's lead in half 4-2 but the Broncos answered with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to push the lead out to 9-2. Gray added to her RBI total with a sacrifice fly and drove in the final run for SCU with an RBI single.
- The Santa Clara offense banged out 14 hits as five players had multiple hits. Cairah Curran, Rebecca Rubio, Hope Alley and Robynn Balmediano each had a pair of hits. Taryn Clements drove in two runs and scored three times.
- Edwards threw the first four innings and was lifted for Alaina Valdez with a 4-1 run lead. She re-entered in the sixth with the Broncos ahead by four runs but with the Lions threatening with two runners on base. She got out of the inning unscathed and pitched the rest of the way to pick up her sixth win of the year.
- Emmy Davis gave up eight runs with just three earned over 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Game 2: Santa Clara 11 - Portland State 2 (5)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (15-10) scored a total of 10 runs in the third and fourth innings to beat Portland State 11-2 in five innings.
- Leiora Davidson plated three runs on 2-for-3 hitting with two of the runs batted in coming on a triple to right field. Robynn Balmediano also brought home two runs with RBI singles in the big innings the Broncos had.
- Meanwhile Hazyl Gray gave up two runs in her 3 2/3 innings of work but because the game only went five innings, she was the pitcher of record to improve to 6-0 on the year.
- Ellie Babbitt had three of the seven hits for Portland State (4-22) who have dropped all four games at the tournament.
NEXT UP:
- Two games will be played on the final day of the Golden Coast Classic on Sunday. The schedule originally called for a single game between Weber State and Santa Clara but that game has been canceled. Instead, Santa Clara will host Columbia at noon PT.
