Broncos Lead Early, Fall to Nevada in Home Stand Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team jumped ahead early on Monday, but visiting Nevada flexed its power and shut down a late comeback push by the Broncos to grab a 13-4 non-conference victory at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Broncos (8-9) scored the game's first run in the first inning in a most unique way. Max Ross led off with an infield single and moved to second on the same play when Nevada second baseman Jack Metcho sailed his throw to first. A groundout moved Ross over to third with one out.

  • The next batter, Mateo Garcia, popped a ball up in foul ground down the left field line. Nevada left fielder Taylor Holder made a sliding catch in foul territory to record the out and retire Garcia, but his momentum carried him into the visitors' bullpen, which is marked as out of play at Schott Stadium. That meant that Ross automatically advanced one base, scoring him and giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

  • Santa Clara loaded the bases with less than two outs in both the eighth and ninth innings, trying to mount a comeback effort, but it was only able to get a single run in both those innings. Dylan Joyce drove a run home in the eighth on an RBI groundout, and Niko Olson drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth. The Broncos went 2 for 11 (.182) with runners in scoring position Monday.

  • Nevada (12-8) hit three home runs – all multi-run blasts – and added two doubles. Five different players had multi-hit games for the Wolfpack, and four had multi-RBI performances.

  • Jayce Dobie (1-1) was strong for Nevada on the mound. The junior righty entered the night with a 10.29 ERA in four starts this season, but earned the win with only one earned run (two total) allowed and three strikeouts in six innings. Dobie retired 13 in a row after Ross' leadoff single in the first, with the Broncos finally breaking through against him in the fifth thanks to a couple of first career hits.

  • Outfielder Hayden Jung-Goldberg made his Santa Clara debut on Monday and hit a one-out double into right field in the fifth for his first hit as a Bronco. He'd later come around to score his first run as a Bronco when sophomore catcher Koen Carston – making his first career start on Monday – singled up the middle for his first career hit. Carston's knock made it 4-2 in the fifth with the tying run at first base, but the Broncos would leave the tying runs stranded. Nevada responded with a three-run homer in the sixth and a two-run homer in the seventh to grow its lead to 9-2.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 1st: On top of Jung-Goldberg's first career appearance, Carston's first career start, and both players' first career hits as Broncos on Monday, Jack Lazark made his first appearance of 2025, pitching the seventh inning and recording a strikeout.
  • 10 1/3: Henry Stewart extended his scoreless innings streak to 10 1/3 innings Monday with a scoreless eighth. He walked the first two batters he faced but induced a double play and got the next batter to pop out to sustain his 0.00 season ERA.
