SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball's Hannah Edwards was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The right-handed hurler went 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA as the Broncos won six of seven games last week, sweeping the doubleheader against Princeton early in the week, followed by a 4-1 record at the Golden Coast Classic Tournament over the weekend.
Edwards threw 19 innings, scattered 17 hits, gave up five runs, four of them earned, struck out 15 and walked just two batters in three appearances.
Against Princeton on Monday, Edwards came in relief in the second inning with the Broncos trailing 6-1. She pitched the remaining 7 1/3 innings as the Broncos mounted a comeback to win 8-7 in nine innings. Edwards allowed just one run on five hits and did not issue a walk to earn the win.
Her next appearance was in the first game of the Golden Coast Classic tournament on Friday, where she started in the circle. She tossed six strong innings, gave up six hits and two runs, just one earned ,in the Broncos 9-2 victory.
The following day, she started against Columbia and went the first four innings before getting lifted for Alaina Valdez with a 4-1 lead. Edwards later re-entered in the sixth with the Broncos ahead by four runs but with the Lions threatening with two runners on base. She got out of the inning unscathed and pitched the rest of the way to pick up her third win of the week and sixth win of the year.
It was the second WCC Pitcher of the Week recognition for Edwards.
The Broncos next play at Northern Colorado in a four-game series starting Saturday.
