SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the second time this season, Santa Clara softball players have swept the weekly West Coast Conference honors as Cairah Curran is the WCC Player of the Week and Avery Seva, the WCC Pitcher of the Week.
Curran and Hazyl Gray took home the season's first WCC weekly honors on Feb. 10.
Curran continued her torrid season going 7-for-15 with four runs scored in a pair of doubleheader games last week. The Ewa Beach, Hawai'i native added a walk for a .500 on-base percentage and swiped a base for her WCC leading 17th stolen base of the season. The reigning league Defensive Player of the Year was perfect in 17 chances playing second base and helped turn two double plays.
The Bronco table setter is hitting .475 on the season, second in the conference behind Saint Mary's Sam Buckley and 18th nationally. Curran also leads the league in runs (39), hits (58) and tied for first in triples (3) along with teammates Rebecca Rubio, Abigail Charpentier and others.
Through 34 games this season, Curran has: a hit in 31 games; safely reached base in 32 games; has 19 multi-hit games; and has scored a run in 27 games.
Seva earned a complete game victory in the Broncos 3-2 win over UC Santa Barbara last Wednesday. It was the sophomore hurler's first career complete game, scattering seven hits, two runs and a walk to give the Broncos the doubleheader sweep and help Santa Clara reach the 20 win mark on the year. A day earlier, she came in relief against Fresno State and tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
For the week, Seva posted a 1.45 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 9 2/3 innings.
It is the second such honor for Curran and the first for Seva.
Santa Clara opens WCC action this weekend at San Diego starting the three game series on Saturday. It is the fourth straight season the Broncos have reached the 20 win plateau. The last time they accomplished the feat was from 2002-2006 when they did it five consecutive years.
