Softball Falls in Extra Innings to Boston College

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Abby Ptak hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the top of the ninth to break a 2-all tie in Boston College's 3-2 win over Santa Clara softball on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Boston College (9-5) and Santa Clara (10-8) were deadlocked in a 2-all tie from the third inning on when Jordan Stephens led off the ninth with a double to the right center gap off Cari Ferguson.  Zoe Hines moved her over on a sacrifice bunt and came home on Ptak's sacrifice fly to center field just beating the throw from Hazyl Gray for the go-ahead run.
  • In the home half of the ninth, the Broncos put the potential tying run at first when Gray reached on an error but Bailey Kendziorski retired the next two batters to earn her first win of the season.  Kendziorski gave up only two hits in her 4 1/3 scoreless innings of work.
  • The Eagles got on the board in the second frame on Meghan Schouten's two RBI double off starter Gray.  They had three hits in the inning but after that, Gray and Ferguson kept the BC bats in check allowing just two more hits with both coming in the ninth.
  • Santa Clara got two back in the third to tie up the game on RBI hits by Taryn Clements and Hope Alley
  • Until the double by Stephens in the ninth, Ferguson faced the minimum 11 batters in 3 2/3 innings of relief, retiring all but one batter.  She hit a batter in the seventh but the runner was erased off the bases getting caught on a steal.  The freshman hurler fell to 2-5 on the year.
  • Stephens had two of the five Eagles hits while Cairah Curran and Kyla Acres had multi-hit games for the Broncos.

NEXT UP:

  • Santa Clara co-hosts the second Silicon Valley Classic tournament this spring along with San José State.  The Broncos play a single game at San José State on Saturday and a home doubleheader against Princeton on Monday for a total of three games.
