AUGUSTA, Ga. - Santa Clara men's golf alum Matt McCarty was en fuego on Friday in the second round of The Masters, carding eight birdies to finish the day 4-under par. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native is 5-under 139 overall where he is tied for fifth and just three strokes off of Justin Rose's lead of 8-under par.
Making his first-ever appearance at the prestigious event, McCarty has secured his spot above the 53-man cut line and will have the eyes of the nation on him as he competes alongside Bryson DeChambeau (-7), Rory McIlroy (-6), Scottie Scheffler (-5) and others on Saturday and Sunday in pursuit of the coveted Green Jacket.
McCarty, who starred for the Broncos from 2016-17 through 2020-21, opened the tournament at 1-under 71 in Thursday's opening round to put himself in a good position ahead of Friday. He had a shaky start to the second round as he put himself in a plus-3 hole early after opening with a double bogey and bogey on the first two holes. The three-time All-WCC performer was not rattled, however, and proceeded to make par on his next three holes before going on tear with four consecutive birdies on Nos. 6-9 and finishing the round with eight total birdies over the final 13 holes. McCarty was tied for third overall when he headed to the clubhouse early to wait for the rest of the results to roll in.
