Alley Hits Walk-Off Double in Softball's 3-2 Win Over San José State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Hope Alley hit a walk-off double in the seventh inning to lift Santa Clara softball to a 3-2 victory over San José State in the Battle of the Alameda on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The score was tied at 2-all in the home half of the seventh when Alley laced a 1-0 pitch from Taylor Peacock down the left field line to score Rebecca Rubio all the way from first base standing up.  Prior to Alley's at-bat, Peacock walked Rubio on four straight pitches.
  • Santa Clara (28-17) had an opportunity to close out the game in the top of the seventh leading 2-1 but San José State (19-24) knotted it up on Ahmiya Noriega's RBI double.  Pinch-hitter Haley Reeve led off the frame with an infield single and advanced a base on a grounder.  With two outs, SCU starter Hazyl Gray was one strike out from securing the win but Noriega's line drive got past the outstretched arm of center fielder Caitlyn Golob in the left-center gap to plate Reeve.  Kendal Manley came in relief of Gray and walked the first batter she faced before uncorking a wild pitch to put the runners in scoring position.  However, Manley hunkered down to strike out Reina Zermeno looking on a full count to keep it a 2-2 game.
  • The two teams each scored a run in the second inning.  The Spartans got theirs on a throwing error by Rubio to allow Annesa Almaguer to come across for the first run of the game.  Lauren Bryson answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
  • In the fourth, Gray and Bryson singled to put the runners at the corners and Marie Martorella came through with an RBI base hit to give the Broncos a 2-1 advantage.
  • Gray, Bryson and Martorella each had a pair of hits with Gray scoring a pair of runs.  Gray also had a strong outing in the circle going 6 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits, an earned run, one walk and striking out three.  Two of the hits she allowed were to Shay McDowell.
  • Manley was credited with her second win of the season while Peacock dropped to 1-2.  The Spartan hurler tossed a 6 1/3 inning complete game.
