Broncos Power Past Cal Poly to Split Season Series

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The offensive awakening continues for the Santa Clara University baseball team.

The Broncos homered three times Tuesday night, scored seven runs, and tallied double-digit hits for the third consecutive game in a 7–5 win over Central Coast adversary Cal Poly in a non-conference midweek matchup at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara (17-23) hit three home runs and Cal Poly (28-15) hit two. Dylan Joyce's team-leading ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the first flipped an early 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead for SCU, one it wouldn't surrender for the rest of the night. Luke Devine put up his first career multi-homer game three days after Joyce did the same thing Saturday versus Pacific. His leadoff solo shot to left field in the second made it 3-1, and his opposite field tank over the right-center field wall in the fourth made it 5-1 Broncos.

  • Santa Clara scored at least one run in every single inning from the first to the fifth. That included a first-pitch RBI double from Tate Medicoff in the third and an RBI groundout from Johnny Luetzow in the fifth to go up, 6-1.

  • But the Mustangs weren't to be outdone. They hit home runs in back-to-back innings themselves, getting a two-out, three-run blast from Nate Castellon in the sixth to pull within two at 6-4. Zach Daudet's two-out solo homer in the seventh made it a one-run game at 6-5.

  • Jace Gillmore entered and halted the Mustangs' rally in its tracks. He earned the first save of his career, retiring all seven batters he faced, including two strikeouts. He extended his scoreless streak to 6 1/3 innings in the process.

  • Cal Poly jumped ahead early, 1-0, in the first inning on an RBI double from Alejandro Garza. Three of the Mustangs' first four batters in the game reached safely, but Santa Clara starter Henry Stewart (3-0), settled down and retired the next two batters to strand two and limit the damage to one run. He earned the victory with two innings of work, only allowing the one run and striking out three.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 3: Medicoff went 3 for 3 Tuesday for his third consecutive multi-hit game. He's batting .778 (7 for 9) with two doubles and two RBIs in his last three games (since Saturday versus Pacific).
  • 3: The Broncos' three home runs Tuesday tied a season high for a single game, matching their outburst versus Grand Canyon on March 15 in Corvallis, Ore. It was their third multi-homer performance in their last four games.
  • 4: Santa Clara got four multi-hit games Tuesday from its lineup with Medicoff, Devine (2 for 3), Thomas Ferroggiaro (2 for 5) and Ben Cleary (2 for 5). It marked its second consecutive game with four multi-hit performances and sixth this season.
