SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the second time this season Hannah Edwards has been named West Coast Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week and the eighth time a Santa Clara player has garnered a weekly conference award for the NCAA Tournament bound Broncos.
The Santa Clara ace twice got the starting nod in the WCC series against Oregon State with league championship implications on the line. She threw 10 2/3 of the possible 18 innings and had a 2.63 ERA to help them clinch the WCC Championship and secure an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
On Friday, the Broncos fell a full game behind Saint Mary's in the league standings after losing the first game of the doubleheader.
Desperately needing a win in game two, Edwards came through with a five-hit complete game effort to get the Broncos to within half a game of the Gaels. She worked with a narrow 1-0 lead through the first five innings. In the sixth, Oregon State touched her up with three straight hits to open the inning to tie the game at 1-all. But with runners at first and second and no outs, Edwards hunkered down to retire the next three batters to keep it a tie game. In the top of the seventh, Santa Clara came through with three runs to take a 4-1 lead and earn a hard fought victory. In seven full innings, the righty hurler scattered five hits, one run, struck out six and walked four.
On Saturday, Edwards returned to the circle to start the series finale throwing 2 2/3 innings before being lifted as the Broncos went on to run-rule the Beavers 15-4 in five innings to capture a share of the WCC Championship.
This is the third WCC Pitcher of the Week recognition for Edwards in her career.
In total, Santa Clara has been recognized eight times by the conference with a weekly award during their championship run. Four different pitchers – Hazyl Gray, Avery Seva, Cari Ferguson and Edwards – have earned the Pitcher of the Week honors five times between them and two position players – Cairah Curran (twice) and Abigail Charpentier – took the Player of the Week honors.
Santa Clara will head to the Tucson Regional of the NCAA Tournament to take on host, No. 13 Arizona, on Friday at 4:30 p.m. PT on ESPN Plus.
