Seven Softball Players Honored for Academic Work by WCC

SAN BRUNO, Calif.Taryn Clements and Hannah Edwards were named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team with five other Santa Clara softball players – Kyla Acres, Robynn Balmediano, Lauren Bryson, Leiora Davidson and Avery Seva -  recognized as honorable mentions.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while being a starter or important reserve (participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests, pitchers at least 25 percent) with legitimate athletic credentials and have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution.

Both Clements and Edwards earned two of the 12 spots on the All-Academic Team.

Clements, a sophomore, was named to the All-Academic Team in her first eligible season with a cumulative grade point average of 3.814 while majoring in neuroscience.  She started in 45 of the 48 games she played in, including 33 starts behind the dish.  She finished in the top 10 in the WCC in seven offensive categories – batting average, on base percentage, RBIs, doubles, walks, sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies.  Defensively, she did not commit an error in 166 chances and was second in the conference in 12 caught stealers.

Edwards has a 3.981 GPA while pursuing a master of arts in counseling psychology to earn her second All-Academic Team selection.  The graduate student closed out the regular season with a 9-5 record and 2.83 ERA and one save.  She made 26 appearances and started a team-high 16 games with two of those coming in the WCC Championship clinching series against Oregon State.  For the next academic year, she will be interning at Momentum for Health, in the mental health crisis stabilization unit.

Acres received her first All-Academic accolade with a cumulative grade point average of 3.365 GPA in public health science.  She batted .304 in 40 games, had a .402 on-base percentage and finished tied for fifth in the WCC with four sacrifice flies.

Balmediano has a 3.346 GPA in psychology to garner her second All-Academic honorable mention recognition.  The junior outfielder played in 31 games, starting in 24 with 22 of those coming at left field.

Bryson has a 3.466 GPA in finance with a minor in real estate.  The senior first baseman hit .250 in 42 games, starting in 37 of them.  She hit the go-ahead home run against Saint Louis at the Paradise Classic in Hawai'i this season to send the Broncos to the championship game.  Bryson will continue her education at Santa Clara by pursuing an MBA.

Davidson earned her second All-Academic honorable mention recognition with a 3.718 GPA majoring in public health science.  The junior first baseman started in 21 of 28 games she played in and has a .269 batting average with five extra base hits and 10 RBIs.

Seva, a sophomore, received her first All-Academic honorable mention recognition.  She appeared in 13 games inside the circle with four starts, posting a 2-1 record with a 3.97 ERA.  The right-handed hurler was named WCC Pitcher of the Week on March 31 with a complete game victory over UC Santa Barbara and a scoreless pitching effort in relief in the week where she had a 1.45 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 9 2/3 innings.
