Baseball has Program-Record Five Named Academic All-District

The Santa Clara University baseball team had a program-record five student-athletes named Academic All-District Tuesday by College Sports Communicators.

GREENWOOD, Ind. — A program-record five Santa Clara University baseball players were named Academic All-District Tuesday by the College Sports Communicators organization, with graduate first baseman Dylan Joyce selected to be on the Academic All-America ballot.

Joyce, Thomas Ferroggiaro, Mateo Garcia, Johnny Luetzow and Henry Stewart were all named Academic All-District. Ferroggiaro, Joyce and Luetzow were also named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic First Team on May 19, with Stewart receiving honorable mention accolades.

The CSC selection process requires student-athletes to have at minimum a 3.50 cumulative Grade Point Average. Athletically, they must have played in 90% or more of the team's contests, started at least 66% of them, or for pitchers – appeared in 17 games or throw 35 innings.

The Academic All-America voting for Joyce and other candidates selected to the ballot begins Tuesday and runs through June 17. Santa Clara baseball has had three Academic All-Americans in the past collecting a total of five awards, the most recent going to Curtis Wagner in 2010. Wagner was also a two-time Academic All-District honoree. Santa Clara has had four total Academic All-District first team honorees, most recently Michael O'Hara in 2023.

Ferroggiaro, who carries a 3.846 GPA in economics, rebounded from a slow start at the plate to finish the season with a .275 batting average. Over the final eight weeks, he recorded 12 multi-hit games and reached base in 18 consecutive contests. His offensive production included five doubles, three home runs, 22 RBIs and 20 runs scored — all career highs.

Garcia, a communication major with a 3.956 GPA, appeared in 49 games and led the Broncos in doubles (13), on-base percentage (.406), walks (30), and hit-by-pitches (16). He batted .255 with two triples, three home runs, and 34 RBIs, and ranked among team leaders with 11 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI efforts.

Joyce, who holds a 3.894 GPA in Santa Clara's MBA program after earning dual undergraduate degrees in business leadership and economics from the University of Puget Sound, led the team in nearly every major offensive category. He finished with a .314 average, 13 home runs, 49 RBIs, and a .580 slugging percentage, while scoring 40 runs and recording 59 hits. Defensively, he posted a .995 fielding percentage at first base over 403 chances.

Luetzow, a finance major with a 3.957 GPA, was named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List and served as Santa Clara's primary catcher throughout the season. He hit .281 with two home runs, five doubles, 23 RBIs and 22 runs scored, while throwing out 13 attempted base stealers and tallying nine multi-hit games.

Stewart, who has a 3.585 GPA in communication, emerged as a dependable option out of the bullpen. In 17 appearances, he went 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .225 average and recording 20 strikeouts across 27 1/3 innings. He opened the season with a stretch of 15 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.
