The Santa Clara women's beach volleyball program earned their sixth consecutive American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award Monday dating back to the 2020 season. The team posted a 3.524 Grade Point Average throughout the 2024-25 academic year, which ranks third highest among all Santa Clara sports programs.
"I'm very proud of our team earning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the sixth straight year, head coach
Jeff Alzina said. "We've actually met the requirements of at least a 3.3 every single quarter during my tenure here. I'm also proud that we had nine freshmen on our roster and 11 newcomers to the program this year, and we didn't skip a beat, finishing the spring quarter with one of our best team GPA terms ever."

The AVCA announced Monday that 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball teams earned their Team Academic Award this season, marking an all-time record number of programs honored for their academic achievements. The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.
Â
"It is very exciting to see that the record-setting, on-court successes during the 2024-25 season have extended to the classroom," AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon said. "The fact that more programs earned the Team Academic Award than ever before is evidence of how committed our coaches are when it comes to helping their players reach their goals as both students and athletes."
Â
The AVCA Team Academic Award is just the latest academic accolade for the Broncos, who saw three student-athletes earning WCC All-Academic honors, as well as three athletes that earned Academic All-District At-Large honors by College Sports Communicators (formerly COSIDA).
Â
The Broncos are coming off one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2025. They won 18 games, which is tied for the most in program history, and reached the West Coast Conference Tournament final for the first time in program history, finishing in second place. The Broncos defeated No. 17 Washington on March 16 for their first victory over a ranked opponent since 2015, and had a historic six players claim all-WCC honors.
