Late Goals Give Women's Soccer Comeback Win at Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Two late goals lifted Santa Clara women's soccer to a hard-earned 2-1 win at Washington State on Saturday night. After a scoreless first half, the Cougars (3-4-3, 1-1 WCC) scored in the first minute of the second half but a red card in the 69th minute opened the door for the Broncos (5-4-1, 1-0-1 WCC) who took advantage and came away with the road victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Just 54 seconds into the second half, a Santa Clara giveaway in the defensive third allowed Jordyn Young to score off an assist from Isabelle Wright.
  • In the 69th, a long ball was heading towards the Washington State box with a Bronco and a Cougar in pursuit. The Cougar keeper Zora Standifer came out to try and get to it first but ended up holding it outside of the penalty area and took the red card that was upheld after a review.
  • Santa Clara took advantage and in the 74th minute Leah O'Brien was taken down in the penalty box. Mailin Orozco stepped to the spot and converted to make it a tie game.
  • O'Brien wasn't done and scored the game winner in the 83rd. Jalana Kimber worked by a defender down the left wing and sent a ball into the box that O'Brien got a toe to and slipped it inside the far post.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara held a 17-13 advantage in shots, including an 11-6 edge in the second half. The Broncos also put seven of their shots on frame while Washington State put four.
  • Santa Clara drew 12 corner kicks to the Cougars' three.
  • Amaris Franco played all 90 minutes and came up with three saves,
  • Standifer ended the night with one save while her replacement, Sidney Venier, had four.
