Women's Soccer Uses Late Goal To Top Dartmouth

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A late goal lifted Santa Clara women's soccer to a 1-0 win over Dartmouth Sunday afternoon from Stevens Stadium. The Broncos (3-3) came out strong but couldn't find a tally until late in the match and then were able to hold off a push from the Big Green (3-1-1) for the final 10 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The breakthrough came in the 78th minute. Jalana Kimber's ball found Lia Henkelmann who tapped it back to Hildi Benediktsdottir 25 yards out. Benediktsdottir rocketed a shot that slightly deflected off Kennedy Schoennauer and went inside the left post, just out of reach of the goalkeeper.
  • Dartmouth pushed hard for the equalizer and nearly found it but a nice save from Amaris Franco and a shot off the crossbar kept the score 1-0.
  • Santa Clara hit the post twice in the first half. Ava Weiland's blast hit the far post from just inside the top of the box in the seventh minute and Mailin Orozco did it on a scramble in the box in the 19th.
  • The Broncos nearly scored in the 70th minute but a Dartmouth defender saved a shot off the line.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara finished the day with 11 shots and four on target. Dartmouth attempted nine shots with four on frame as well.
  • The Broncos drew nine corners while surrendering three.
  • Ally Reynolds started the match and made two saves in the first half. Franco played the second half and came up with two saves.
  • Paige Knoth finished the game with two saves.
  • This was the first time Dartmouth was shutout this season. The Big Green came in averaging 3.5 goals per match.
  • It was just the second game in which they conceded a goal.
