Last Second Goal Sinks Women's Water Polo

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's water polo closed the Bronco Invitational with a heartbreaking 11-10 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon. The Broncos (1-10) tied the game six times but a goal in the final seconds lifted the Otters (6-8) to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara struck first at 4:41 on a goal by Chloe Rizof that held up until Monterey Bay evened things up at the 1:55 mark. The Broncos came right back and retook the lead at 1:34 thanks to Evelyn McLaughlin's penalty shot goal. The score would stay at 2-1 until the end of the period.
  • The Otters scored the first two of the second period to take their first lead of the game. Santa Clara responded with a goal at 1:55 but Monterey Bay came right back 16 seconds later to take a 4-3 lead it would hold at halftime.
  • The Broncos got the third quarter started on the right foot with back-to-back goals that put them up 5-4, but the Otters would score the next two to take back the advantage. After another one for Monterey Bay, Mia Barkett scored back-to-back to get Santa Clara even with just 16 seconds left in the quarter, but the Otters scored with one second left and led 8-7 at the end of the period.
  • The fourth quarter saw Santa Clara tie the game, only for Monterey Bay to answer back and retake the lead three times. The final goal came on the Otters' final possession and found the back of the cage with just six seconds on the clock. The Broncos pulled the goalie but couldn't come up with another equalizer as their last second shot was blocked by Nalani Galindo.
