STANFORD, Calif. – Santa Clara softball closed out the DeMarini Invite with an 11-3 loss to No. 10 Stanford on Sunday afternoon inside the new Stanford Softball Stadium. The Broncos led 3-1 through the first 2 1/3 inning but the Cardinal scored the final 10 runs of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Stanford (10-4) offense churned out 17 hits and scored in every inning except the first to beat Santa Clara in a six inning run-rule game.
- Addyson Shppard had three hits to lead seven Cardinal with multi-hit games. Taryn Kern had one hit but it was a three-run home run in the sixth.
- Santa Clara (6-9) struck first in the opening frame when Cairah Curran and Rebecca Rubio led off the game with back-to-back singles followed by a successful RBI bunt by Kyla Acres off Cardinal starter Elena Krause.
- In the top of the third with the game tied at 1-1 and the bases loaded, Taryn Clements came through with a single to bring in two runs to put the Broncos up 3-1. But Stanford answered once again in the home half of the inning to knot things up at 3-all on Izzy Cacatian's RBI single and Emily Jones' sacrifice fly.
- The Cardinal took the lead for good in the fourth scoring three runs on four hits, a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Sydney Boulaphinh brought in the go-ahead run getting plunked with the bases juiced.
- Stanford added two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Boulaphinh singled in the final run to give Stanford the run-rule victory.
- Krause went the distance to move to 3-1 on the season.
