Ferguson Dazzles in Softball's Split Against Nevada and UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split their two games against Nevada and UC Davis on the second day of the Capital Classic on Saturday at La Rue Field, falling to Nevada 6-3 and beating UC Davis 3-0.

Game 1: Nevada 6 - Santa Clara 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Katelyn Wetteland drove in four runs, Madison Clark went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Nevada took advantage of a pair of Santa Clara errors in the 6-3 Wolf Pack win in a neutral site contest at La Rue Field on the campus of UC Davis.
  • Santa Clara (7-12) committed an error in the third and fourth innings that lead to a combined four unearned runs.
  • In the third, Wetteland singled home Karolyn Glover for the first run of the game.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Broncos starter Ellison Schroeder induced what would have been an inning ending grounder but an error by shortstop Rebecca Rubio allowed a second run to score to make it 2-0 Wolf Pack.
  • The Broncos answered in the bottom of the third with two runs on three hits and a couple of wild pitches.  Cairah Curran singled in a run and a wild pitch by Tess Bumiller scored Caitlyn Golob to knot it a 2-all.
  • Nevada (12-7) retook the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs, all unearned after Haylee Engelbrecht reached base on a fielding error by Schroeder to lead off the inning.  Madison Clark brought in a run with a base hit and Wetteland brought home two more with a single to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Each team added a run on RBI grounders by Hazyl Gray in the fifth and Wetteland in the sixth to close out the scoring.
  • Bumiller threw six innings to earn her third win of the season while Sofie Seese retired all three batters she faced in the seventh to pick up her first save.
  • Schroeder (2-5) was saddled with the loss going four innings and five runs, only which one was earned.
  • Curran and Merlino each had two hits while Golob scored twice.

Game 2: Santa Clara 3 - UC Davis 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Cari Ferguson dazzled in the circle throwing an two hit shutout and Elle Merlino drove in two runs in Santa Clara's 3-0 win over UC Davis.
  • Ferguson gave up her only hits in the third to Sydney Polli and in the seventh to Gia Felice and faced 24 batters, just three over the minimum.  She gave up one walk and struck out five in her 95 pitch outing to improve to 4-5 on the season.
  • Santa Clara (8-12) got the scoring going in the top of the first.  Leadoff batter Cairah Curran slapped an infield single to short, stole second and came around to score on a grounder by Elle Merlino.
  • Merlino doubled in a run in the fifth and Rebecca Rubio added an insurance run in the seventh to give Ferguson a three run cushion.
  • Curran scored all three runs for the Broncos and stole three bases.
  • Caroline Grimes pitched a complete game for UC Davis (9-8).
