SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Santa Clara University beach volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at San Jose State's Spartan Beach on day two of the Battle of the Bay, falling 4-1 to host San Jose State before rebounding with a 4-1 win over Sacramento State.
vs. SAN JOSE STATE
- Despite the 4-1 final, the Broncos' (6-2) morning dual versus San Jose State (3-3) was tightly contested across multiple courts. Seven of the 11 total sets played were decided by three points or less. Two deciding sets went into extra points, and four sets were won by the bare minimum two-point spread.
- Isabella Martinez and Mia Scheepens needed an extra point in set two to edge Avery Cukjati and Sadie Snipes at No. 1, 21-18, 22-20. The No. 2 matchup went the distance, with Randi Reeves and Rio Thomas slipping past Mandy Hansen and Sammy Wood, 21-19, 18-21, 15-13 in a third-set battle.
- The closest contest came at No. 4. The deciding and final set two took 18 extra points. Kylee Moore and Anna Salmon outlasted Ciara Cantlen and Noelle Niederman, 21-17, 30-28. At No. 3, Grace Baker and Kaia Fanshier defeated Reilly Rose Gilliland and Alexandra Urbina, 21-15, 21-16.
- Santa Clara's point came at No. 5, where Callie Loughran and Ava Stoddard and handled Sabrina Moore and Sophia Torres, 21-11, 21-18. In exhibition play, Kawena Chillingworth and Hayley Hahn earned a straight-set victory.
vs. SACRAMENTO STATE
- The Broncos responded in the afternoon, winning four of five scoring courts to secure the 4-1 result over the Hornets (3-5)
- Snipes and Wood set the tone at No. 1 with a commanding, 21-10, 21-11 win over Aurora Bibolotti and Victoria Marthaler. Cantlen and Urbina added a 21-15, 21-12 victory at No. 3 against Greta Davis and Karlie Spohn.
- At No. 4, Loughran and Niederman split the first two sets before pulling away 15-9 in the third to defeat Kate Doorn and Mia Guevara. Tyler Parouse and Stoddard secured the fourth point at No. 5 with a 21-18, 21-17 win over Skyler Gartin and Mackenzie Natusch.
- Sacramento State's lone point came at No. 2, where Reese Ampi and Ashlynn Archer defeated Cukjati and Hansen in three sets, 21-19, 17-21, 15-11.

- Santa Clara next travels to Southern California for four matches at the Long Beach State Invitational, starting Friday.
