SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Santa Clara University beach volleyball team opened Cal Poly's Mustang Roundup on Friday with a split, falling to No. 17 Grand Canyon, 4-1, before rebounding to sweep Oregon, 5-0, at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
 
vs. No. 17 GRAND CANYON

• Santa Clara (9-5) was tested throughout by the No. 17 'Lopes (6-8), with three of five pairs going the distance and the Broncos proving competitive from top to bottom against its third consecutive ranked opponent.
   
• Defending West Coast Conference Pair of the Week Ciara Cantlen and Alexandra Urbina delivered the lone point for Santa Clara versus GCU, rallying past Jessica Drake and Isabelle Tucker at the 4s after dropping the first set. The pair rebounded to take the second, 22-20, before closing it out, 15-13, in the third.
   
• At the 2s, Avery Cukjati and Teagan Wilson pushed Grand Canyon's Sarah Edler and Katie Keefe all the way to a third set in a hard-fought match, finishing 16-21, 21-9, 15-11. At the No. 1 pairs, Sadie Snipes and Sammy Wood dropped a narrow, 21-19, 21-19, decision to Becca Drake and Karynn Garrow.
   
• Reilly Rose Gilliland and Noelle Niederman were downed at the 3s, while Callie Loughran and Ava Stoddard dropped a 21-16, 21-19 decision at the 5s to Youna Coens and Jordyn Decker.

vs. OREGON

• The Broncos closed out the day with a sweep of Power-4 program and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation member Oregon, winning four of five pairs in three sets to complete the shutout.
   
• Cantlen and Urbina set the tone at the 4s, dispatching Oregon's Natasha George and Katrena Koellner in straight sets, 25-23, 21-17, to give Santa Clara an early lead. Snipes and Wood won a three-set battle at the No. 1 pairs, 21-17, 18-21, 15-9, while Cukjati and Wilson recovered from dropping the opener to take the 2s match, 18-21, 21-19, 15-10.
   
• Loughran and Stoddard matched that resolve at the 5s, rallying from a first-set loss to win 19-21, 21-19, 15-13 and secure another point for the Broncos. Niederman and Gilliland capped the sweep at the 3s in one of the day's most competitive matches, edging Hanna Bjornson and Sofia Taylor 19-21, 24-22, 15-13 in a back-and-forth battle that went to extra points in the second set.
