SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Cari Ferguson was named West Coast Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The reigning WCC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year had a 1.31 ERA in 16 innings of work spanning three starts last week to go 2-1.
At the Capital City Classic Tournament on Saturday, Ferguson tossed a two-hit shutout against UC Davis in the Broncos 3-0 win. The sophomore from Long Beach, California gave up her only hits in the third and seventh innings and faced 24 batters, just three over the minimum. She walked one and struck out five in her 95 pitch outing to pick up her fourth win of the year.
The following day, Ferguson started in the circle against Sacred Heart and was lifted after four innings with a 4-2 lead. The Broncos held a one run lead in the top of the seventh as Sacred Heart loaded the bases with no outs when Ferguson re-entered in relief and retired the next three batters to shut down the Pioneer come back attempt to give the Broncos a 5-4 victory. The Bronco hurler got Alex Barbera to ground out to second to cut down the lead runner at home for the first out. The next batter, Olivia Bibbo popped up on an infield fly rule. With two down, Ferguson battled Savannah Moore for an eight pitch at-bat before striking her out swinging to end the game, stranding all three runners on base. She picked up her fifth win with the final line of five innings, five hits, two runs, no walks and four strikeouts.
On the season, Ferguson is 5-5 with a 2.64 ERA and five complete games in 11 appearances.
It is the first WCC weekly honor for the Broncos this spring and the second recognition for Ferguson in her career.
The Broncos next play at San José State in a doubleheader on Saturday.
