San Jose State Draws Even in Season Series with Baseball

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — 24 runs scored on 24 base hits, 11 of them for extra bases, with nine pitchers, nine free base runners and three errors – Tuesday's non-conference clash between crosstown rivals San Jose State and the Santa Clara University baseball team had just about everything, as the Spartans evened the season series with an 18-6 run-rule-shortened victory at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Jose State (11-13) had eight extra-base hits Tuesday, including four home runs – all in the first three innings. Rohne Klein hit a three-run blast to cap a six-run first inning for the Spartans, and Jake McCoy hit a two-out solo shot in the second to get a run back after the Broncos (9-14) scored twice in the bottom of the first. Brent Cota hit a one-out solo bomb in the third to start a five-run rally, and Peyton Rowles capped the five-run third with another three-run homer, making it 12-4 at the time.

  • Santa Clara battled early, too, though. Back-to-back extra-base hits by Tate Medicoff and max Ross in the bottom of the first scored two runs to make it 6-2. Johnny Luetzow, playing in his first game since Feb. 27 and batting leadoff, hit a two-run homer in the second inning to make it 7-4. The Broncos loaded the bases in the third and scored a run on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk to pull within 12-6.

  • The Spartans added an insurance run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh to secure the mercy rule victory. Their last six runs came in less powerful ways, though, including a sacrifice fly, a bases-loaded walk, a two-run infield single and an RBI groundout. Peter Herrick locked down the game on the mound for the Spartans after their first two pitchers allowed six runs in the first three innings. Herrick threw 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief, only allowing three hits and no walks while striking out four to earn his first save of the year.

  • True freshman righty Max Reimers shined in relief for SCU. He collected a season-high three strikeouts in a season-long 1 2/3 innings pitched, not allowing a run on only one hit and one walk. Robert Aivazian (0-1) took the loss after allowing three earned runs (four total) on two hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning pitched.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 22: Ben Cleary extended his active reached base safely streak to 22 games. He reached base three times Tuesday, the 15th time during the streak he's reached multiple times in a game.
