Broncos Surge Past LMU to Complete Sweep

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team jumped back into the thick of the West Coast Conference race Sunday, overcoming two deficits to complete a three-game sweep of LMU with a 10-5 win at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara (12-14, 3-3 WCC) produced double-digit runs on double-digit hits for the second time in three days against the Lions (8-23, 0-6 WCC). The Broncos trailed 2-0 and later 5-3, but responded with seven runs across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away and secure their first sweep of LMU since 2018, also at Schott Stadium.

  • The Broncos had five more multi-hit performances, highlighted by three-hit days from Thomas Ferroggiaro, Johnny Luetzow and Tate Medicoff. Medicoff sparked Santa Clara's second comeback in the fifth with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-4, then scored the go-ahead run two batters later on Waylon Walsh's RBI fielder's choice to make it 6-5. He added two insurance runs in the sixth with a two-out, seeing-eye single to extend the lead to 9-5. Medicoff finished 3 for 5 with a double, a run scored and a team-high three RBIs.

  • Santa Clara tied the game at 2-2 in the third after LMU scored an unearned run in the second and added a solo home run from Travis Friend in the top of the third. Luetzow singled home Ferroggiaro from second, and Will Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ben Cleary. Walsh added his other RBI of the day with a go-ahead single in the fourth to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead.

  • Freshman right-hander Trevor Banning (1-0) earned his first career win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in the fifth and sixth. LMU had already scored twice in the fifth to regain a 4-3 lead and had a runner on second with one out, threatening for more. Banning allowed his inherited runner to score, pushing the lead to 5-3, but struck out the first batter he faced and induced an infield popup to end the inning. He followed with a scoreless sixth, opening the door for Santa Clara to pull away.

  • RJ Meyn earned his third save with 3 1/3 shutout innings to close the game, striking out two while allowing two hits and no walks after entering in the sixth. Jace Gillmore struck out four over three innings to start, allowing one earned run (two total).

  • Friend went 2 for 4 with a home run from the nine spot for LMU. The Lions left eight runners on base, including five in scoring position. Alec Johnson (0-4) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks in two innings.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 16: Santa Clara erased two different deficits Sunday, giving it 16 total deficits erased this season when trailing at any point. The win was their fifth come-from-behind win of the year.
  • 25: Cleary's reached base safely streak was extended to 25 Sunday. He's reached in all 24 games he's played in 2026 and reached safely in the last game of 2025.
  • 31: Santa Clara's 31 total runs scored over the weekend are the most it's scored in a three-game series against LMU since May 28-30, 2010, when it scored 38 in three games in Los Angeles. That included a 22-13 win in the series finale. It's the most runs Santa Clara has scored in a weekend series of any length (three or four games) since Feb. 23-25, 2024, when it scored 34 in three games versus UMBC at Schott Stadium.
