Beach Volleyball Edged by Oregon in Hawaii

Alexandra Urbina (pictured) and Ciara Cantlen won their fifth consecutive match as a duo Saturday versus Oregon.
HONOLULU — Facing Power-4 program Oregon on Saturday for the third time this season, and this time doing it 2,400 miles away from home, the Santa Clara University beach volleyball team played as close of a match that could be played, with 10 of 12 sets played decided by three or fewer points, as the Ducks barely skirted by the Broncos, 4-1, at the Clarence. T.C. Ching Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ciara Cantlen and Alexandra Urbina won at the No. 4 pairs – their fifth consecutive win as a pair – to account for the Broncos' (16-12) lone point in the dual. After narrowly dropping the first set by only two points, 21-19, they came from behind to win set two in extra points, 22-20, then won the third, 15-12, over Oregon's Hanna Bjornson and Sofia Taylor.

  • Avery Cukjati and Sadie Snipes also went to three sets at the No. 1 spot. The Broncos duo took the first set, 21-19, over Oregon's Gwen Fife and AJ Slojkowski. Fife and Slojkowski then came back to win the second in extra points, 25-23 and escaped with a 15-12 win in the third and deciding set.

  • Teagan Wilson and Sammy Wood were clipped at the 2s, falling in the first set by three points (21-18) and the second by only two in extra points (25-23). Mandy Hansen and Noelle Niederman went extra points in their first set at the No. 3 spot, barely falling, 24-22, before falling in the second, 21-13, to Daley McClellan and Elsa Snipes. Tyler Parouse and Ava Stoddard only lost by three points in their first set at the No. 5 pairs, then fell, 21-15, in the second to Oregon's Landree Coats and Natasha George.
