Beach Volleyball Closes Hawaii Trip vs. No. 16 Hawaii, Oregon

HONOLULU — The Santa Clara University beach volleyball team closed out its weekend in Honolulu on Sunday, falling to No. 16 Hawaii, 5-0, before dropping a 3-2 decision to Oregon at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
 
vs. No. 16 HAWAII
  • Santa Clara (16-13) kept things competitive throughout against the host No. 16 Rainbow Wahine, with four of five pairs pushing Hawaii in both sets before dropping the match.
     
  • Cantlen and Urbina were the most tested at the 4s, forcing Hawaii's Caprice Lorenzo and Kristen Serrano to extra points in both sets before falling, 26-24, 24-22. Chillingworth and Reilly Rose Gilliland were within three in both sets at the 5s, dropping a 21-18, 21-15 decision to Sophie Buschmann and Sarah Burton, while Wilson and Wood fell to Kiera Cornman and Emily Heintzelman, 21-19, 21-15, at the 2s.
     
  • Snipes and Cukjati dropped a 21-15, 21-15 decision to Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile at the No. 1 pairs, while Niederman and Hansen fell to Sydney Miller and Julia Thelle at the 3s, 21-16, 21-8.
vs. OREGON
  • Santa Clara pushed Oregon to the limit in the afternoon, with Cantlen and Urbina and Niederman and Hansen each earning points for the Broncos in a closely-contested 3-2 match.
     
  • Niederman and Hansen took the 3s in straight sets, 21-16, 23-21, holding off Daley McClellan and Elsa Snipes to give Santa Clara an early lead. Cantlen and Urbina rallied from a first-set loss at the 4s to defeat Hanna Bjornson and Sofia Taylor, 21-12, 14-21, 15-10, keeping the Broncos in the match.
     
  • Cukjati and Snipes dropped a 21-17, 21-18 decision to Gwen Fife and AJ Slojkowski at the No. 1 pairs, while Chillingworth and Gilliland fell to Landree Coats and Natasha George at the 5s, 21-16, 21-16. Wilson and Wood pushed Oregon's Bella Gamache and Liz Rossi all the way to a third set at the 2s before dropping the decision, 18-21, 24-22, 15-9.
