Pacific Rallies Late Again to Sneak Past Broncos

STOCKTON, Calif. — Santa Clara right-hander Jace Gillmore threw a career-long 6 2/3 innings Saturday, only allowing one earned run on the road at West Coast Conference foe Pacific, but the Tigers scored five runs – all with two outs – in the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind for the second straight day and beat the Broncos, 6-3, clinching a series win at Klein Family Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Like Friday night, the Tigers (14-23, 6-8 WCC) got a clutch home run in the late innings to put them ahead. Brendan O'Sullivan hit a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to put Pacific up, 4-3. The inning had been extended on an earlier throwing error by the Santa Clara infield, allowing O'Sullivan to come to bat in the first place.

  • Santa Clara (14-23, 3-11 WCC) built a 3-1 lead which it carried into the seventh with RBIs from Andrew Rayment, Mace Wheeler and Will Anderson. Rayment tied a career high Saturday with three hits, including his second triple of the year, scoring Waylon Walsh. Wheeler followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rayment and the Broncos led, 2-0. Anderson doubled home Luke Devine in the third to make the lead 3-1.

  • Santa Clara stranded 11 runners Saturday, six of them in scoring position. The Broncos loaded the bases in the eighth, looking for their own two-out rally, but a hard line drive to second base ended the threat. Rayment doubled in the eighth, leaving him only a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Max Ross (2 for 4) and Anderson (2 for 4) joined Rayment with multi-hit performances of their own.

  • Carson Revay earned his second save in as many days for Pacific, throwing 1 1/3 shutout innings with only two hits allowed. Ethan Shaver (2-1) earned the victory in 1 2/3 innings of shutout, no-hit relief work. Josh Johnson (1-1) took the defeat for Santa Clara after allowing three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings while also striking out three.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 16: Johnny Luetzow drew a pinch-hit walk in the eighth Saturday to extend his reached base safely streak to 16 games. The streak dates to Feb. 27 versus UNLV.
COMING UP
