HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara (21-28, 9-14 WCC) collected double-digit hits (16) Saturday for the sixth game in a row – something it hasn't done in more than 11 years, since a six-game stretch from April 25 to May 3, 2015. Eight of the Broncos' 16 hits went for extra bases, including three triples and four home runs. They also had eight extra-base knocks in Friday's series opener, marking the first time they've had eight or more extra-base hits in back-to-back games in at least 15 years (since 2011). The Broncos scored double-digit runs for the third time during their current four-game winning streak, something they haven't done in more than a year (March 22-28, 2025).
Â
- The pitching was also working again for Santa Clara. Jace Gillmore (3-4) earned the victory over Seattle (17-27, 11-12 WCC) with a quality start, throwing six innings and only allowing three runs on four scattered hits. Gillmore struck out a career-high eight Redhawks, including five over his final 2 1/3 innings of work. Gillmore retired seven of the final eight batters he faced, the only one not retired reaching via an error. Josh Johnson earned his first career save by throwing the final three innings. He only allowed one run and walked none while the Broncos' offense piled on late.
Â
- Santa Clara's most impressive offensive performance came from the top spot in the order. Thomas Ferroggiaro tied career highs with four RBIs and four runs scored and logged his first career multi-home run game. The senior switch hitter homered from both sides of the plate, hitting a game-tying solo homer in the fifth while batting right-handed, then crushing a three-run blast from the left side of the plate in the eighth. Both home runs came on the first pitch of the at-bat.
Â
- Luke Devine also homered while going 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. His two-run shot in the seventh gave Santa Clara some breathing room, expanding a 4-3 lead to 6-3. Ben Cleary went 2 for 4 and hit his third homer of the season, going back-to-back with Ferroggiaro in the fifth. After Ferroggiaro's solo shot tied the game at 3-3, Cleary's drive over the right-center field wall two pitches later put SCU back on top, 4-3.
Â
- Will Anderson went 2 for 5 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Mateo Garcia went 2 for 3 with a triple and run scored off the bench, giving the Broncos five players with multiple hits. Camden Sos reached base three times, going 1 for 3 with two walks and a run scored.
Â
- Santa Clara jumped on Seattle early again, scoring in the first inning for the fourth consecutive game and fifth time in its last six games. Johnny Luetzow doubled home Ferroggiaro, who began the game reaching on an error. Payton Lambert led off the second with a triple – his third of the season – and scored on a wild pitch to give the Broncos a 2-0 early lead.
Â
- Payton Knowles (2 for 5) had multiple hits for Seattle at the top of the lineup for the second day in a row. Royce Hale went 2 for 4 with a run scored, as did Brandon Stinnett, who also hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth that temporarily gave the Redhawks a 3-2 lead. Kale Hammer (2-3) took the loss for Seattle, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked none, but allowed four extra-base hits.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
