Mazonas Tallies Game Winner in Men's Soccer Season Opening 2-1 Win Over Cleveland State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer secured a season opening 2-1 victory over Cleveland State behind goals by Josmar Guandique and Gabrielius Mazonas at Stevens Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

SCU scored both goals in the second half while goalkeeper Jackson Ozburn recorded six saves with five of those coming in the back 45.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • All the goals came in the second half as Santa Clara scored a minute after intermission in the 46th minute when Guandique notched his first career goal, assisted by Diego Jalleau, also a career first.  
  • Cleveland State (0-1), the defending Horizon League Tournament Champions and a 2025 NCAA Tournament qualifier, equalized in the 55th minute with a goal by Domenic Ruggiero, assisted by Bora Eldem and Tom Mertz.
  • Gabrielius Mazonas restored SCU's lead in the 83rd minute, with an assist from Will Wiersdorf in what ended up as the game winner.  
  • Five minutes into the opening half, Mertz challenged SCU's defense with a shot that was saved by Ozburn.  
  • Midway through the first half, the Broncos applied pressure with a series of shots from Isaiah Teng, Mazonas, and Alejandro Arenas, the latter saved by Stephen Yerian.
  • Lennart Heck of Cleveland State received a yellow card in the 30th minute, intensifying the physicality on the field.  
  • The scoreless first half saw a total of 12 shots with seven those coming from Santa Clara.  
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES: 
  • Santa Clara leads the series 5-0-1.
  • Santa Clara head coach Cam Rast is 13-10-2 in season openers. 
  • Three newcomers - Yarin Hasson, Jona Starek and Isaiah Teng - were in the starting XI.  Two other newcomers, Jalleau and Bradley Roberson, came off the bench.  
  • Junior Ezana Alemayehu saw his first action getting a starting nod.
