Men's Soccer Blanks Fordham 2-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer secured a 2-0 victory over Fordham on Sunday at Stevens Stadium.  Both goals were scored in the second half with Alejandro Arenas converting on a penalty kick and Josmar Guandique notched a goal in his second straight game while Jackson Ozburn recorded a shutout with two saves.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • It was a scoreless game until Arenas capitalized on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.  The PK was awarded as Arenas' header hit the cross bar and as Diego Diaz pursued the rebound, he was tripped up in the box by Marc-Alexandre Happi Emaga.  Arenas calmly slotted the ball to the lower right corner as goalkeeper Shayon Kashi dove the other way.  
  • Guandique added to Santa Clara's (2-0) lead with a goal in the 79th minute, bringing the score to 2–0 in favor of the Broncos.  
  • Fordham (0-1-1) started aggressively with Kamran Mojabi's shot saved by Jackson Ozburn in the first minute as the Rams had three shots and a pair of corner kicks in the opening two minutes.  
  • In the 24th minute, Gabrielius Mazonas had a shot on goal saved by Shayon Kashi, maintaining the defensive stand for Fordham.
  • Andrew Sullivan's shot in the 38th minute hit the left woodwork, marking SCU's closest scoring opportunity.  
  • In the 51st minute, Will Wiersdorf took a shot aimed at the bottom center but was denied by Kashi.
  • Gavin Flickinger struck the top woodwork with a shot in the 56th minute, narrowly missing the goal for the Rams. 
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES: 
  • Santa Clara tied the series 1-1.
  • The shots were even at 12 each with the Broncos holding a 5-2 edge on shots on goal.    
  • Freshman Matthew Crothers came off the bench and played 11 minutes in his Bronco debut.
