SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Nil Grau scored in the third minute of the match for Utah Valley as the Wolverines held on for a 1-0 victory over Santa Clara men's soccer on Sunday at Stevens Stadium in a physical match that saw a total of 36 fouls. It closed out a four-game homestand for the Broncos finishing with a pair of wins and losses.
The Broncos (2-2-0) recorded 13 shots, including two on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Jackson Ozburn recorded two saves while playing the full 90 minutes in goal. Moises Almontes finished with two shots, one of which was on target. Josmar Guandique led SCU with three shots, including one on goal. Andrew Sullivan contributed three shots, though none were on target.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Utah Valley (3-0-0) saw themselves up a goal just two and a half minutes into the game when Grau chipped the ball over Ozburn from the right side of the box that ricocheted off the far post before bouncing in. Owen Knecht and Jeremie Kuelo were credited with the assists.
- Guandique and Almontes had shots on goal saved by Utah Valley's Jackson Medina in the 2nd and 19th minutes, respectively.
- Utah Valley's Jose Luis Martin Montealegre's shot in the 25th minute was saved by the Ozburn, maintaining the one-goal difference.
- In the 50th minute, Ozburn made a save against a shot from Adem Arous, keeping the game scoreless.
- Utah Valley maintained pressure with consecutive shots in the 56th minute, both narrowly missing the target, as Oliver Watts hit the woodwork and Noah Pogue's attempt went wide.
- Santa Clara had multiple chances in the second half including shots by Almontes in the 71st minute and Niv Berkovitz in the 84th minutes but in both cases, they went wide, unable to capitalize on their attacking opportunity as Utah Valley held on to secure a 1-0 win.
