SAN ANTONIO — Santa Clara women's soccer defeated UTSA 1-0 on Thursday to snap the Roadrunners seven match unbeaten streak to start the season. Kennedy Schoennauer scored in the 86th minute off an assist from Jacey Martinez for the match's lone goal.
The Broncos (4-2-3) spent much of the first half defending Roadrunners pressure, with Ally Harrison making three saves to keep the match scoreless. Santa Clara answered late with shots from Jalana Kimber, Lucy Wimsatt and Hildi Benediktsdottir, including Benediktsdottir's attempt on goal in the 40th minute, but no one found the back of the net and the half ended 0-0.
Schoennauer put Santa Clara in front in the 86th minute, scoring off Martinez's assist to break a 0-0 tie. Earlier, the Broncos generated three shots and two corner kicks from the 50th to 59th minute, including Addie Whitehouse's saved attempt. Harrison made two second-half saves, and Santa Clara closed out the 1-0 win.
Schoennauer's goal was her team-leading seventh of the season and it was the second assist of the year for Martinez. Harrison made five saves over 90 minutes and finished with her fourth shutout of the year.
Jasmine Kessler played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded four saves for the Roadrunners (4-1-3). Bri Carrigan finished with two shots, including one on goal. Sabrina Taber also tallied two shots and put one on goal.
