SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Will Wiersdorf tallied the game winner as Santa Clara men's soccer came back from a goal down to defeat San Diego State 2-1 on Sunday night to snap their five-match losing streak in the final nonconference tuneup before the start of West Coast Conference play. The win came in front of 1,356 fans including 825 Ruff Riders setting the record for the most students attending a men's soccer game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wiersdorf's goal came in the 79th minute off assists from Diego Jalleau and Moises Almontes for the go-ahead goal. On the play, Almontes delivered a perfectly weighted ball as Wiersdorf slipped behind the defense and chipped it over the Aztec goalkeeper Nic Diana who came off his line to find the back of the net. It was the senior captain's second goal of the season.
- At the 57th minute mark, with Santa Clara (3-5-0) trailing by a goal, Jalleau leveled the match. Off of a Bronco clearance to midfield, the San Diego State defender failed to control the ball as Jalleau collected the ball just outside the center circle and had a 1-v-1 against Diana and calmly delivered the equalizer.
- In the first half, the Broncos generated five shots and a corner in the first 10 minutes, including Alejandro Arenas' attempt saved by Diana in the ninth minute.
- San Diego State (2-4-3) created a corner and three shots after the 30-minute mark, with SCU goalkeeper Jackson Ozburn saving Nik Orth's attempt in the 44th minute. The Broncos closed the half with Tyler Tipton's shot before halftime arrived scoreless.
- San Diego State got on the board in the 52nd minute on Dylan Mair's goal off assists from Orth and Max Mair.
- But just five minutes after, Jalleau took advantage of an Aztec turnover for his first collegiate goal to re-energize the crowd.

- Santa Clara leads the series 14-7-3.
- The assist by Almontes was his first of the season.
- Wiersdorf has scored two goals in the last three games.
