Feb. 12, 2006

Box Score

Davis, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team used a strong hitting performance to propel itself to two victories over host UC Davis this afternoon. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Broncos had 13 hits in a dominating 13-3 victory over the Aggies and then later added nine hits in a 4-3 win over the home team. The senior trio of Jenny Brown, Jessica Clee, and Shannon Linerud combined for 11 hits and six RBIs in the two games.

The first game was a tight, defensive battle by both squads, as the score was tied up at 1-1 at the end of the fourth inning. However, Santa Clara exploded for nine hits at the top of the fifth inning, resulting in a whooping 12 runs. The scoring spree was highlighted with a Clee homerun, a triple by Angela Kabanuck, and two doubles by Brown and Linerud. UC Davis was able to score two more runs at its next at bat, but it would not be enough, as Jackie Morales (1-1) picked up her first win of the year. Rachel Kelly (0-1) took the loss.

In the following game, no one was able to score again until the fifth inning, when Santa Clara was able to get on the board. Morales got things started by doubling to left field and scored on a wild pitch during Brittany Pucci's at bat.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as UC Davis scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie things up again. At the top of the sixth inning, with the bases loaded, Maggie Godfrey hit a single to center field to score Clee for a 2-1 advantage. UC Davis tied it up again at their next at bat, after Sara Overmier gave up two hits, resulting in a run and a tied ball game once again.

The game stretched to eight innings after no one was able to come up with a run in the seventh inning. Clee started off the inning with a single up the middle and Linerud followed it up with a single to left field. Off of an error by the catcher, both Clee and Linerud scored to seal the win for the Broncos. The Aggies were only able to muster up one run in their subsequent at bat, as Sara Overmier (1-0) kept the home bats at bay to pick up her first win of the season. Lindsay Tognetti (0-1) took the loss.

Santa Clara improves to 2-2 on the year, and returns to action next week at the Stanford Invitational. First up will be Birmingham Southern at 9 a.m., followed by host Stanford at 1:30 p.m.
