SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball offense erupted for 11 runs on 11 hits and Ellison Schroeder threw a five-inning complete game in an 11-1 run-rule victory over Oregon State to secure the West Coast Conference series. Robynn Balmediano had three RBIs, Hazyl Gray drove in a pair and Taryn Clements recorded three hits to lead the offensive attack that also featured six stolen bases.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first inning, Santa Clara (19-17-, 4-1 WCC) plated two runs in the second, six runs in the third and three runs in the fourth for a total of 11 runs as eight Broncos collected a hit.
- Balmediano got the scoring going with a two-RBI double off of Oregon State starter Bailey Murray. Oregon State answered with a run in the top of the third on an RBI base hit by Tristian Thompson to make it 2-1 but it was all Broncos the rest of the way.
- In the third, the Broncos had six hits, all singles, and sent 10 batters to the plate to knock out Murray from the game. Five players drove in a run in the inning and another was scored on a stolen base by Rebecca Rubio on the frontend of a double steal with Claire Krotine.
- The double steal of home and second base worked again in the fourth between Cairah Curran and Rubio, this time with Curran swiping home that pushed the lead to 9-1. Gray and Clements singled in a run each for the final runs of the game.
- Schroeder gave up a run on six hits, walked two and struck out four for her fourth complete game and earn her eighth win of the season.
- Thompson went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Oregon State (14-25, 2-3 WCC). Madison Weir also had a multi-hit game.
