SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Santa Clara bullpen gave up just four runs, but the Broncos fell to No. 21 Cal, 4-1. Santa Clara used six different pitchers, highlighted by Powell Fansler's two perfect innings to start the game. Offensively, the Broncos amassed nine hits including a RBI single from Matt Ozanne.  

"I thought we pitched well enough to win," said head coach Mark O'Brien. "We threw 99 pitches in nine innings, that's a pretty good ratio. We just made a couple base running mistakes and couldn't get timely hits. If we did, it would have been a different story."

Powell Fansler pitched just two innings, but was flawless. His two-inning outing was predetermined before the game.

"He threw over the weekend and we want him for this weekend," said O'Brien. "I was really happy with his outing."

Joe Supple replaced Fansler in the third, giving up the first run of the game. Supple walked the first batter he faced. He recovered to pick off the runner, 1-3, for the first out of the inning. Louie Lenich singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Tony Renda hit a RBI single to put the first run on the board.

The Broncos got on the board in the home half of the fourth. Patrick Terry singled and Wagner laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Terry to second. Drew Ozanne singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Matt Ozanne singled to left field to score Terry from third. After four innings, the Broncos trailed by one run.

After a scoreless fifth frame, Max Deering pitched the sixth for Santa Clara. Deering surrendered two singles that put runners on the corners. Deering allowed two runs, extending the Cal lead to 4-1.

The Broncos will look to continue their strong pitching when they head to Pepperdine this weekend.

"I thought we did a good job of throwing the baseball tonight," said O'Brien. "If we pitch the baseball the way we are capable of with Cory [Hall] pitching, Friday we should be ready to go."
