GREENWOOD, Ind. — For the second consecutive year, Santa Clara University baseball has produced one of college athletics' highest academic honorees, with senior catcher
Johnny Luetzow being named a third team Academic All-American by College Sports Communicators on Tuesday.
Â
Luetzow capped a decorated four-year career with the Broncos in 2026, earning CSC Academic All-District honors twice, West Coast Conference All-Academic First Team recognition twice and WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll "Gold" status three times. He added all-WCC honorable mention recognition this spring to a resume that already included earning WCC All-Academic honorable mention as a sophomore in 2024. Luetzow graduated from Santa Clara with a bachelor of arts degree in finance while carrying a 3.941 grade-point average.
Â
Luetzow follows in the footsteps of
Dylan Joyce, who was named a first team Academic All-American in 2025. Luetzow is the fifth member of the Santa Clara baseball program to be named an Academic All-American. Joyce (2025), Curtis Wagner (2010, 2nd Team), Wes Bliven (1986-88, 1st Team) and Walt Kaezmarek (1972, 2nd Team) preceded him. Luetzow's award marks the first time in 38 years the Broncos have been bestowed All-American awards in back-to-back years, since Bliven earned his three consecutive first team honors from 1986-88.
Â
Luetzow was Santa Clara's everyday catcher in 2026, slashing .333/.420/.500 across 39 games with 44 hits, 25 RBIs, 10 doubles and four home runs – all career season bests. He reached base safely in 16 consecutive games from March 24 through April 19 and put together a seven-game hitting streak from April 2-12, going 11 for 23 (.478) against San Diego, Clemson and Saint Mary's. Luetzow batted .298 and carried a .395 career on-base percentage in 126 games across four years for the Broncos. He finished his career with 113 hits, 58 RBIs, 57 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.
Â
Luetzow signed his first professional contract this month, joining the Glacier Range Riders of the MLB-Partner Pioneer League. He made his pro debut on Sunday against the Missoula Paddleheads, a 21-2 blowout win for Glacier. Luetzow went 2 for 3 and was plunked twice to reach base four times in five plate appearances. He scored three runs in the Range Riders' offensive explosion, including twice in the first two innings as the team ran out to a 14-1 lead.

A total of 33 student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans across the first, second, and third teams. Mississippi State pitcher/designated hitter Noah Sullivan was named the Division I Academic All-America Team Member of the Year, carrying a 4.00 cumulative GPA as a graduate student majoring in organizational leadership. The 33-man team averaged a 3.85 cumulative GPA, with the first team averaging 3.84. Five student-athletes carried perfect 4.0 GPAs.
