SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite a solid starting effort from Peter Hendron and tallying eight hits, Santa Clara fell to Boston College 3-1 on the second day of the young season. The Broncos take the field tomorrow with a doubleheader against Boston College and Nevada. Santa Clara will begin Sunday with a 12 p.m. bout with Boston College, followed by a 4 p.m. game with Nevada.

Hendron got the start for the Broncos, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing one earned run, six hits, one walk and striking out one batter.

"Peter did a good job of [overcoming an error]," said Santa Clara head coach Dan O'Brien. "Hendron handled that situation well and considering he didn't throw a lot last year, his game was outstanding."

In the top of the first frame, Boston College took advantage of a Santa Clara error with back-to-back RBI doubles by Geoffrey Murphy and Chris Shaw.

After a scoreless second, Murphy tacked on another run for Boston College to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, Santa Clara attempted a two-out rally, but came up just short. Greg Harisis forced a two-out walk before Rory Graf-Brennen singled up the middle. With runners on first and second, Zach Looney lined a ball to right field that was caught by a diving Tom Bourdon.

Looney started off the sixth inning with a single before advancing on a wild pitch. With one out, Casey Munoz was able to move Looney to third.

The Broncos came alive in the eighth after a big boost from Nick Medeiros. After trading zeroes for four innings, the Eagles threatened after Murphy doubled to leave off the eighth.  Murphy advanced to third on a Jason Seever wild pitch. Sever plunked a batter before being replaced by Medeiros. Medeiros entered and got two quick outs before punching out Stephen Sauter to end the inning.

The energy poured over into the bottom of the frame with Harisis lifting a ball over the wall for his first dinger of the season to cut the BC lead to 3-1. However, the Broncos were unable to add additional runs in the inning.

Boston College added a run in the ninth to make the final score 4-1.

GAMES NOTES: Tyler Meditz replaced Jose Vizcaino, Jr. in right field in the fourth inning … C.J. Jacobe made an over-the shoulder grab in left field to rob Travis Ferrick of a would-be extra-base hit with two outs in the top of the sixth … Looney moved from third base to left field in the seventh inning with Max Kuhns coming in to play third … Seever relieved Peter Hendron, pitching 0.1 innings before being replaced by Medeiros … Kenny Treadwell pitched the ninth inning.
