SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Santa Clara Broncos fell behind 4-0 in the second inning of Tuesday's game and could not respond in a 6-0 loss to No. 11 Cal Poly (Baseball America) at Baggett Stadium. The Broncos drop to 6-7 and the Mustangs improve to 9-2 in a fog-shortened game called with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Santa Clara has a four-game weekend on deck with the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament, beginning 6 p.m. Thursday against Washington at Schott Stadium.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jacob Steffens (L, 0-1) threw four innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts as the Santa Clara starter. The Mustangs loaded the bases with an error, infield single and bunt single before senior catcher Chris Hoo hit a two-RBI double to center to open the scoring at 2-0 in the second. Sophomore second baseman Mark Mathias followed with an RBI sac fly and junior right fielder Nick Torres hit a two-out, RBI single through the right side to put the Mustangs up 4-0.

Cal Poly's freshman right-handed pitcher Justin Calomeni (W. 3-0) allowed no runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in his third collegiate start. Bronco freshman second baseman Rory Graf-Brennen went 2-for-3 on the night and three other Santa Clara batters combined to record the team's five hits.

Santa Clara's Kevin George threw 2.2 innings of relief and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Cal Poly added two runs in the fifth to take a 6-0 advantage; senior third baseman Jimmy Allen hit an RBI double and scored on an error later in the inning.

Play was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the seventh due to excessive fog and eventually called.
