Box Score 2 SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the first games at home this season, Santa Clara softball fell to Cal State Fullerton (5-1) 5-3 and Idaho State (1-6) 8-5 on Friday in the opening day of the Bronco Classic.
"We're close," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "We need to clean up a few things to win these close games. We left too many runners on base and need to learn how to close out games but we're just a few adjustments away from where we want to be."
Game 1
A two out single back through the middle put runners on the corners for Fullerton in the top of the seventh. Courtney Rodriguez followed with a bouncer through the right side that tied the game at 3-3.
Moore followed with a perfectly placed bloop down the left field line that fell in between two defenders for a two-run double that put the Titans up 5-3.
Micaela Vierra (1-2) tossed a complete game and allowed five runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts while picking up the loss for Santa Clara.
Kelsie Barnard was 1-3 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI to lead the Bronco offense. Gianetta France and Morgan Modesto each added an RBI.
With a runner on second and one out in the home half of the fourth, Barnard roped a triple to right-center field that tied the game at 2-all. Modesto followed with a sac fly to the track to give the Broncos their first lead of the day.
Christina Washington (0-0) started for Fullerton and allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 4.0 innings
Jasmine Antunez (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen with 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Sarah Moore and Melissa Sechrest both had a double and two RBIs to lead the Titan offense.
Game 2
After scoring single runs in the second and third, Idaho State broke it open with a four-run fourth. The big hit was a two-run single by Kacie Burnett that put runners on the corners and led to a sac fly to put the Bengals up 6-1.
A bases loaded double by Geenamarie Bonilla in the bottom of the fifth got the Broncos back in the game. Her two run knock ended the day in the circle for Foster.
The first pitch thrown by Ashlyn Ames got away from the catcher and brought in another run before Barnard made it a 6-5 game with a solid RBI single to left.
Idaho State added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
McCall James (0-1) tossed a complete game and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Bonilla had a double, a run scored, and two RBI to lead the Bronco offense. Kelsie Barnard was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Bailey Foster (1-1) started for Idaho State and got a win in 4.1 innings. She allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Ames picked up a save with 2.2 innings of relief.
Burnett was 2-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI to lead Idaho State. Alex Portesi was 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Three other Bengals each added an RBI.
The Broncos return to action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. vs. Seattle and at 4:45 vs. Idaho State.
