Hawai'i Defeats Broncos 8-1 Behind Von Ruden's Complete Game

HONOLULU — Santa Clara baseball fell behind Hawai'i 3-0 in the first inning Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium, and the Rainbow Warriors rode a complete game effort from starting pitcher Kyle Von Ruden to an 8-1 victory. Hawai'i evened the series with the Broncos after Santa Clara won 3-1 on Thursday night.

Von Ruden (W, 3-1) set the tone by issuing a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first and retired the first eight batters he faced. He surrendered three hits and an earned run alongside no walks and five strikeouts. After the Broncos (9-11) scored their only run of the game in the sixth, Von Ruden retired 12 straight batters to end the night.

The Rainbow Warriors (10-13) scored three runs on four hits before making an out in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Weeks hit an RBI single and Eric Ramirez followed with an RBI double to give the hosts a lead they held the rest of the way. Santa Clara starter Mitchell White (L, 2-3) pitched 5.0 innings and allowed five earned runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. 

Hawai'i added five runs in the middle innings on a two-run single from Kekai Rios in the fifth, followed by RBIs in three straight at-bats in the sixth. Grant Meylan and John Cresto started off the sixth with a pair of singles for the Broncos. Two batters later, TC Florentine hit an RBI groundout to bring across Meylan.

Meylan had two hits and a run scored in the loss. Ramirez went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Luke Martin-Resnick pitched the final 2.2 innings for the Broncos and struck out two batters. 

Santa Clara and Hawai'i meet for game three of the series Saturday at 9:35 p.m. PDT. Steven Wilson (2-0, 2.70 ERA) takes the hill for the Broncos against Alex Hatch (2-2, 4.50 ERA). 

GAME NOTES: Time of the game was 2:30 … attendance was 2,715.
