SEATTLE – Santa Clara men's tennis picked up eight wins – five singles and three doubles – in day one of the ITA Fall Northwest Regional Championships on Thursday.
The opening day of the 121-player singles draw and a 58-team doubles draw tournament saw the completion of two doubles rounds and one singles round.
Santa Clara junior
Vasileios Iliopoulos took part in a team-high three wins, including advancing to the doubles round of 16 paired with senior
Andrew Gu. The twosome beat Leo Hibi and Issa Yoshida of Portland in the opening round, 8-4, before taking care of host Washington's Alexis Alvarez and Sebastian Hawken, 8-7(6) in the second round. The Bronco duo will next face the No. 1 seed Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer of Washington on Friday.
Seniors
Connor Garnett and
Robert Seby won its opening round over Eastern Washington's Manuel Balce and Jeremy Mueller before losing to Paul Barretto and Can Caya of Cal, 8-6, in the second round.
In singles, Iliopoulos won against Portland's Elefteiros Nos, 7-5, 7-5 in the opening round for his third win on opening day.
Five other Broncos advanced to the round of 64 in singles play including Gu who had an opening round bye. Senior
Robert Seby beat Hunter Egger of Gonzaga, 6-4, 6-3. Senior
Connor Garnett took care of Portland State's Tommy Edwards, 6-2, 6-2, junior
Jesus Tapiador Barajas handled Sacramento State's Donald Hall, 6-1, 6-3, and freshman
Arthur Neuhaus deposed Sacramento State's Louis Chabut 6-0, 7-6(2).
All the round of 64 singles matches will be played on Friday.
