Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Four Santa Clara pitchers combined to shut out Wake Forest, 2-0, striking out 16 Demon Deacons and not allowing a runner past second base all night. An RBI single by
Jake Brodt in the first and a
John Cresto solo homer in the fourth inning provided the runs for the Broncos (3-2) in the series opening win.
Wake Forest (2-4) put a pair of runners on base in every inning except in the second and third and each time, the Bronco pitching rose to the occasion.
In the first inning, Bronco starter
Steven Wilson struck out Shane Muntz with runners at first and second to end the inning. The same scenario would play out in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings where a different Bronco pitcher would punch out a Demon Deacon to kill the threat.
Left-hander
Alex Barden, who came in relief of Wilson in the third, struck out Johnny Aiello to strand two Deacs in the fifth frame.
In the sixth, sophomore
Michael Praszker came in relief of Barden with two runners on and struck out Chris Lanzilli.
Redshirt junior
Eric Lex relieved Praszker in the seventh and promptly struck out Wake Forest cleanup hitter Bobby Seymour. Lex would throw 2 1/3 innings to close out the game for his first save as a Bronco.
Steven Wilson struck out five batters in two innings in a predetermined pitching rotation to earn his first win since May 13, 2016. Wilson missed all of last season due to an injury.
The Bronco pitching staff has allowed just one run in the last two games, following a 4-1 win over San Jose State on Feb. 20.
Santa Clara will start right-hander
Alex Waldsmith (0-1, 0.00 ERA) on Saturday against lefty Carter Bach (0-0 1.80 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
