SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Back-to-back two-run hits by
John Cresto and
Jake Brodt in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a 6-4 comeback win for Santa Clara (5-3) baseball over Nevada (3-4) on Tuesday.
Down 4-2 heading to the home half of the seventh, the Broncos loaded the bases off three straight walks by Wolfpack pitchers Cole Henderson and Cooper Powell. With two outs, Cresto sent a sharp single to right field scoring
Joe Becht and
Austin Reyes to tie the game up 4-4.
With runners at the corners, Brodt doubled down the left field line past the diving third baseman, Daniel Perry, to score Fisher and Cresto to give the Broncos a 6-4 edge, completing a four-run inning.
Bronco reliever
Penn Murfee who had given up his first runs of the season in the top of the seventh, pitched the eighth frame before turning it over to closer
Eric Lex.
In the ninth, Lex allowed a one out single but closed it out getting pinch-hitter Joshua Zamora to ground out to third and striking out Perry to close out the game for his second save of the year.
Murfee (2-0) was credited with the win and Powell (0-1) took the loss for the Wolfpack. The Broncos have now won five games on the young season, eclipsing last season's non-conference win total of four.
In the fourth inning, Cresto hit a towering solo home run, his fourth consecutive game with a homer and fifth overall. Cresto finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, raising his season average to .324.
Santa Clara continues its homestand on Friday, taking on Utah from the Pac-12 conference. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT
