Softball Picks Up Win Over Boston in Friday Split

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball picked up its first win of the year in a 3-0 victory over Boston after dropping the day's opener 8-0 in six innings to No. 22 Long Beach State.

Game 1
Long Beach State (15-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with a two-out rally and added three more in the fourth on after two were out and none were on. The 49ers added two in the sixth to close out the game.

Naomi Hernandez was 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs to lead to lead the offense. Seven other 49ers had one hit apiece and four had an RBI.

Jessica Flores (2-1) picked up the win in 6 one-hit innings, walking one and striking out eight.

Kelsie Barnard picked up the lone Broncos (0-11) hit, a leadoff single up the middle in the sixth. Taylor Burns also reached via walk.

Aubree Kim (0-5) took the loss in 4 innings. She allowed six runs, four earned, on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

Game 2
Micaela Vierra (1-5) was fantastic for the Broncos (1-11), tossing a three-hit shutout for her first win of the year.

Santa Clara scored the only run it would need in the top of the first when Ellie Fisher led off with a walk and promptly stole second. After a ground out, Fisher moved to third on an infield single by Taylor Burns. A walk loaded the bases and Hannah Russel was hit by a pitch to give the Broncos an early 1-0 lead.

After two were down in the fourth, Santa Clara rallied for two runs to take a 3-0 lead for some insurance. Morgan Modesto started the rally with a double and Barnard singled to center to bring her around. Two walks and a single by Eleni Spirakis brought in the second run of the frame.

Eleni Spirakis, Hannah Russel, and Modesto all finished with two hits to lead the offense with three different Broncos collected RBIs and three scoring a run each.

Lizzie Annerino (1-2) started for Boston (5-5) but lasted just 1/3 of an inning and got the loss.. She allowed a run on a hit with two walks.

UP NEXT
The Broncos face UCF at 9 a.m. and CSUN at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
