Baseball Falls To No. 2-Ranked Stanford, 16-8

Box Score
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 2-ranked Stanford Cardinal jumped on Santa Clara early, scoring seven runs in the first inning en route to a 16-8 victory in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Schott Stadium.

The game started inauspiciously for the Broncos (15-11), committing two errors on the first pitch grounder by Stanford's leadoff hitter, Tim Tawa, who ended up at third.  The Cardinal (22-3) would score seven runs in the inning sending 12 batters to the plate to knock out Bronco starter Alex Waldsmith.

The score would remain 7-0 until the fifth when the Broncos scored on Cory Moore's (1-for-3, RBI) RBI double.  It was the freshman's first hit and RBI as a Bronco.

Stanford added three runs in the seventh and six more runs in the eighth to extend its lead to 16-2 before Santa Clara scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin of the game.

Seven Broncos pitched, none throwing more than two innings.  Eric Lex pitched two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, retiring all six Cardinal while striking out three.

Joe Becht drew a walk in the third inning to extend his consecutive bases reached streak to 26 games.

Santa Clara travels to Provo, Utah to play BYU from Thursday to Saturday in a West Coast Conference matchup.  First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT.
